Ten candidates have filed to run for three open seats in the 2017 Cottonwood Heights Municipal Election. A primary election will be held on August 15 to narrow the candidates to two per position. The Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

In 2014, the Utah Legislature passed the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI), which promised to reduce prison and jail overcrowding for those affected by substance abuse and mental illness. The approach was to use evidence-based data to target individuals who shouldn’t be locked up for being mentally ill or drug addicts and funnel them into treatment programs.

February is cause for much celebration. There’s Groundhog Day, President’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras and Superbowl Sunday. Since there never has been a problem adding new recognition days in February, I’d like to propose a new one. I call it “I Finally Got Those Security Cameras Installed Day.”

He’s a familiar face to thousands of kids in Cottonwood Heights, and Officer Michael Galieti has been a part of the Cottonwood Heights Police Department since its inception. Galieti held his final D.A.R.E. graduation ceremonies in early January, just prior to his retirement from the CHPD. He will be missed.

As Cottonwood Heights continues our first year of snow plowing, we want to thank the citizens for their support and encouragement. While the crews continue to work on improving the service, there are a few items that bear repeating to make snow plowing a united effort.

Representatives from Layton Construction presented a check to the city, representing $15,000 in savings from the money budgeted to build the new city hall.

The Revel Big Cottonwood Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon drew thousands of visitors to Cottonwood Heights on Sept. 10. More than 4,400 runners participated in the event, which is an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

In 2014, 32 percent of Utah adults aged 18 years and older had been prescribed an opioid pain medication in the previous 12 months. Prescription opioids can be addictive and very dangerous.

It was a fun day for dogs of all kinds at Mountview Park on Sept. 17.

UDOT plans to renovate SR-210 (Wasatch Blvd.) from Big Cottonwood to Little Cottonwood Canyon. Construction is scheduled to begin August 8 and continue through November.

Everyone who got a chance to see the CH Arts Council’s recent production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers were impressed by the efforts of a talented cast and crew. It’s been about 6 months since Cottonwood Heights City Council authorized the public works transition but a lot has happened in that time. As I was doing some research on fire-related fatalities in 2015 (the totals have yet to be captured and compiled), I learned something about 2016 that literally turned my stomach. Nationally, The U.S. Fire Administration reports that there have already been 362 civilian and 8 firefighter deaths caused by structure fires at the time of this writing.

On Jan. 27, Ordinance Enforcement Officer John Lovato and police officer Polly Harris were making their usual rounds in the city when a call went out on the radio for a house fire. Since both officers were nearby, they arrived on scene at about the same time a crew from Unified Fire Authority got there.

Cottonwood Heights citizens and our police are two parts of one team, but with different roles. Our citizen role is to “see something, say something,” to be vigilant, call 911 and report, but not intervene. Intervention and apprehension are the jobs of the police members of our team.
