City council takes close look at exotic pet ordinance
Posted on 08/30/2013

Cottonwood Heights has been the subject of news coverage lately regarding the city’s exotic pet ordinance. Several residents say the ordinance is vague and does not provide enough protection for responsible exotic pet owners. Others say exotic pets should be highly regulated and their numbers severely restricted.

The Cottonwood Heights City Council has made every effort to listen to all sides of the discussion, and has even asked for opinions from animal and reptile experts at a local university. They have pledged to reconsider the ordinance carefully to decide if changes are warranted. However, the council has also emphasized that because so many types of animals can be considered “exotic pets,” it will take time to decide on changes that are fair to pet owners as well as residents of the city that don’t own exotic pets.

Discussions about the ordinance are ongoing. If you are interested in this topic, make sure to check weekly city council agendas, which are posted under the Public Records tab.
